After reading and watching a lot of git I want to give it a try. I used Bazaar-ng (bzr) for some time now, but just for my own, small projects. I searched the internet to find a way to convert my project and don’t loose the history. I stumbled upon bzr-fastimport in which a bzr-fast-export.py exists in the export directory. But nowhere was a word about what to do with it.

$ git init

That’s the easy part. Now you have to add all the files you had under bzr control.

$ git add file1 file2 dir1 dir2

I did this individually as not all the files in the directory should be under revision control. You could just say

$ git add .

to add all files under the current directory (except .git). But I guess this will even add the .bzr directory what you not want.

After this the interesting part, getting the old history. (I assume you named your bzr repository foo.)

$ /some/path/bzr-fast-export.py foo | git-fast-import

And finally commiting it

$ git commit -m "import of old bzr repo"

This worked for me, hope it works for you, too.

Schadenfreude ist doch was Schoenes. Heute schaut GMX zurueck auf die grossen Erfinder und Wirtschaftsleute, die mit ihren Einschaetzungen danebengelegen haben. Zu finden ist darin unter anderem, dass der CEO von IBM 1943 weltweit lediglich 5 Kunden fuer Computer ausgemacht hat.

Meine Lieblingsstelle ist aber die, wo Bell seine Erfindung vermarktet. Erfinder des Telefons ist ja bekanntlich (aus deutscher Sicht) Philipp Reis.

Tja, da ist den GMXlern wohl auch ein kleiner Irrtum unterlaufen…

1. Was war Deine erste “echte” PC-Hardware?
Was ist “echte” PC-Hardware? Ich hatte einen Schneider Euro PC-II. Das war so 1990 oder 1991. i8088 mit 9,14MHz und 512KiB RAM. Ohne Festplatte, ein 3.5″ DD Laufwerk und dazu ein HDC Monitor mit 320×200 Pixel in Amber. Den hatte ich später mal auf 786KiB aufgerüstet und mit einer EGA Grafikkarte und EGA Monitor komplettiert. Betriebsystem war MS-DOS 3.30
(man, bin ich alt…)

2. Deine erste Anwendung, welche Du benutzt hast?
Die erste? Das MS-DOS Lernprogramm, was dabei war - war richtig gut, gegen spätere Programme, die ich so kennengelernt habe.
Ansonsten schöne Textadwenture, MS-Works, Programmieren in GWBASIC…

3. Dein erstes Spiel?
Ein Textadventure, keine Ahnung mehr wie es hieß. War eine ca. 12KiB COM Datei…

4. Hattest Du von Anfang an Spaß an der Materie?
Und ob - aber das schlägt sich ziemlich deutlich in meinem Lebenslauf nieder…

5. Seit wann bist Du online, und mit welchem Anbieter?
Zählen Mailboxen auch mit? Ich hab zumindest 1994 schon eMail geschrieben und war Co-SysOp der Quark L2, einer Mailbox im MausNet. Angefangen hat es bei mir mit einem 2400er Modem, ohne Datenkompression und ohne Fehlerkorrektur. Was man auf den damaligen Telefonleitungen auch ab und an zu spüren bekommen hat…

Das was ich lese ist eher technischer Natur - da kann ich niemanden zum König machen…

Gehört Weblogs Deiner Meinung nach die Zukunft oder sind sie nur ein vorübergehender Hype?
Blog ist ja die Realisierung dessen, was man Web 2.0 nennt. Also, ja es wird sie auch zukünftig geben. Aber ich denke nicht, dass sie das klassische Web verdrängen. Blog ist eine einfache Möglichkeit Beiträge zu veröffentlichen, ohne sich vorher eine Webseite gestalten zu müssen. Sprich die Hemmschwelle sinkt. Außerdem gibts Kommentare fürs Ego
Und die Zukunft? Wird es Dein Blog / Deine Blogs dann auch noch geben?
Geben? Sicher, aber vermutlich nicht intensiver gepflegt als bisher. Solange ich noch öfter schreibe als Updates zu installieren lohnt es sich auch…

From a today’s post on the squeak-beginners mailing list:

1. Squeak image is like a ’software computer’ - an entire computer, not just an IDE. The ‘quit’ doesn’t shutdown, it only suspends this computer and the vm resumes it from where you left off next time you start it. Objects created in this image can live on for years! This soft computer even crashes like a real one. I always work with copies of images when experimenting with it.
2. Commands take the form “<subject> <verb> ..” instead of the usual “<verb> <subject>”. Though, this sounds simple, it takes some time to switch mental models from imperative mode to message sends.
3. Most tutorials exhort beginners to “doIt”. Please don’t. Use “debugIt”, so you can see trace the execution and learn a lot from it. Tracing something even as simple as “3+4″ can be very illuminating as it takes you through compiler, string conversions, primitive calls and so on. After a few hours browsing code, DNU pop-ups are no longer scary :-(. Morphs (like menus) can be traced by using the debug halo item.
4. I find the “explain” menu item very handy while browsing code (e.g. Is SoundPlayer a class or a variable?). It is buried one level deep in content menu :-(. I also make liberal use of “implementors of” and “senders of” to understand the larger context.
5. The “browse protocol” is another useful menu item listing all messages (including inherited ones) for an object. Here again, the most useful category, ‘–all–’, comes in the end :-(.
